In August, we had to say goodbye to Teddy. He had been diagnosed with HCM the summer before. That is a terminal diagnosis, but it is unclear how long you have with your cat.
When I went to the vet again in July this year, just before we went on vacation, she actually was surprised that he was still alive. That was a reality check for us, as we hadn’t realized how serious this is, and that the prospects were this grim.

VMWare ESXI 6.7 with Realtek 8168 on commodity hardware

This is really more of a reminder for myself for how to do this again in the future, if I need this. But I thought other people might also be finding this useful, so I decided to just publish it and not let it rot in my knowledge OneNote I keep.
The challenge I recently upgraded my computer, and the old computer was gathering dust in a corner. Still a respectable 4 core Xeon E3-1231, with 32 GB RAM.

Tim & his sister settling into their new home

The new tank in the office
I admit it - I have been bitten hard by the aquarium “bug”. I got the first tank at new years, and since then I have slowly expanded. I now have in my office a 30L cube aquarium for shrimp and snails. The mini ramshorn snails took my tank in the living room over, and I wanted to put some assassin snails in there.

That Friday feeling

That Friday feeling
Teddy captures it perfectly, without the need for any words.

A welcome sight

When I woke up today, I was greeted by this sight in my tank. Luckily, it was not the algae itself which greeted me, but that it finally turned red. As that is the sign it is dying.
This marks a turning point in my battle with Staghorn algae. It appeared about 4 weeks in the tank, and slowly has taken over a lot of the plant leaves - the anubias, the java fern and the grass.

New critters in the house

Last friday, at Feb 21st, I started putting in the last species which is planned for the living room tank right now.
Leopard Corydora (corydora trilineatus)
These are a little bit more sensitive fish, so they came now quite late in the setup process of the new tank. They are bottom dwellers, and sift through the sand, so it was especially important to get rid of the blue-green algae first.

Your face when...

For some reason, Teddy really, really, really likes to play with the water in the sink in our bathroom. To the point, where Tor Livar has to fill the sink every morning in some sort of a routine.
I went into the bathroom now, he came very hopeful with me, but there was no water in the sink - so he had to lie down dejectedly next to the bathtub.

Whose algae wafer is it anyway?

Whose algae wafer is it anyway? Sometimes, things can get a little bit confrontative during feeding time. Here, the bristlenose pleco, for who the waver is actually, had just discovered it, but the guppies didn’t want to let it go. The pleco basically lay on top of the waver for a bit, but the combined might of the guppies had him retreat in the end.

Lily

Since new years, it has been clear that the time Benni had left was quite limited, and on February 6th, 2013, I had to let him go and put him to sleep. When I visited the vet that day, it was apparent that each additional day would have been just filled with pain for him. Maybe I’ll write something to that whole mess in a future post, but at the moment, that isn’t possible for me, yet.

Norderney

Instead of tormenting people with my vacation pictures, I made a slideshow and put some music under it.

PHP stinks!

Who would have thought?
When I adapted the code for the TYPO3 Extension T3Blog (on which this Blog is based) a bit for my own purposes, I was led to a very strange behavior in PHP.
In the existing code, I had calls to a static method in a static class. To be able to XCLASS the class, I made an instance of this class – and suddenly nothing worked anymore.
